Changing Overwatch's 'Play of the Game' a "really hard problem"

During an interview with GameSpot, Overwatch Lead Software Engineer Rowan Hamilton spoke about the origins of the Play of the Game mechanic and its originally intended use.

Speaking specifically about how the Play of the Game seems to veer towards player who do higher damage over support of defensive heroes, Hamilton said "From a technical standpoint, it's a really hard problem to have a computer figure out what is cool. They're not very smart."
It does sound like they are working the system though.

"We also have a lot of cool systems internally where we can play with the algorithm that determines Play of the Game and play the same game back again, and be like, 'Okay if I tweak these numbers, what's going to be the Play of the Game that gets picked this time?'" There was even mention of Mercy getting Play of the Game for mass resurrection at the last second to save the game. It could happen. As Hamilton put it, "It's going to be an ongoing process, and hopefully we continue to improve it."

I have faith. Blizzard knows how to keep their fans happy and how to fix problems when they arise. Just look at how Diablo III was at launch compared to the Diablo III we have now. Its massively improved. So, Blizzard knows what they're doing. I have faith.

The full interview is linked up above and right here, just in case. Give it a read, its pretty good.
