Bloodstained, another upcoming Wii U game gets cancelled
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a spiritual successor of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night from director Koji "IGA" Igarashi, has been cancelled for Wii U.
This news comes from Igarashi himself, on the game's Kickstarter page. Igarashi apologizes for the cancellation and explains the reasoning behind the move.
Hello, this is IGA.
Thank you for always supporting us. I would like to give a message to the backers who pledged for the Wii U version of Bloodstained.
During our Kickstarter campaign, the Wii U was at the height of its popularity, but the situation has drastically changed after the release of Nintendo Switch.
This change made it difficult to receive the necessary support from the hardware maker, which has led us to drop the Wii U development and shift the development to Nintendo Switch.
We are very sorry that it has come to this after all your support, but we hope you will understand. We would like to respond by preparing options for our backers, such as moving your pledge to another version or requesting a refund if you don’t want any other version.
We hope you will continue to support us.
Silver Lining: the game is now coming to the Switch! Even better, the Switch version is replacing the Wii U version, for those who asked for that version in their backer survey.
It's easy to understand why this change was made. Nintendo hasn't been shy about saying Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be the last game they will release on the Wii U. From there, I can see why Nintendo would be reluctant to support any other titles still in development for Wii U.
If you're disappointed by this and do not want the Switch version, you can always request a version for another platform or request a refund. For instructions on getting a different version, scroll through the update posted above. If you're okay with getting the Switch, you need do nothing more; it's all set up for you.
Bloodstained has been delayed until 2018, for release on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and now Nintendo Switch. The Wii U port was only planned after the game's Kickstarter achieved a $3 million stretch goal.
