Sony's Shawn Layden Responds to Cross-Play Controversy

If you've been listening to any of the noise coming from the gaming community recently, you've likely heard much of the noise created by gamers about a single issue: Fortnite cross-play. Specifically, Sony's willing exclusion from PlayStation-Switch-Xbox cross-play. You might not have heard it here in the Spider-Web cause I'm into Fortnite Battle Royale, but outside its everywhere.

It doesn't help when certain execs say things like "...more than 80 million monthly users on PlayStation Network... and "We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms."

It was a statement that felt more tone-deaf than anything else, regarding their stane on full cross-play. Now, in speaking with Eurogamer at Gamelab conference, PlayStation Executive Shawn Layden had this to say about the growing anger from the PS Community:

"We're hearing it. We're looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business."

A better statement, but just what kind of "solution" could they be searching for? I know it might not be as simple as people make it out to be, with someone recently bringing it to my attention that cross-play on this game could open doors for other cross-play they might not want open.

Still, it doesn't look good when Xbox and Nintendo are playing nice together and PlayStation is the only one left behind. It looks even worse when players who used an Epic Games account on PlayStation suddenly can't migrate their account to Nintendo Switch or Xbox.

Still, this statement says that PlayStation and Sony are indeed listening, so I hope they can find some way to fix this.
