PlayStation Network Made More Than All Of Nintendo

According to fiscal earnings reports recently released, PlayStation Network made a total of approximately 529 billion yen, roughly 4.9 billion USD at the end of Sony's fiscal year, which ended March 31, 2016. All of Nintendo made 504 billion yen.

Although this is quite a gap, it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. At least, not anyone who has been following gaming news in the last few years. The Wii U has sold abysmally, only selling around 13 million units worldwide. By comparison, the PlayStation 4 has almost reached 40 million units in just 2.5 years. This kind of massive install base would undoubtedly lead to larger numbers, but digital sales can't be the only thing attributed to these numbers.

The fact is, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Plus has become all but a necessity, being required to play online with friends. Where this service was once an optional feature that afforded gamers with a few free games and discounts, now its required if PS4 players want to play their games online.

These things combined definitely boosted PlayStation's numbers quite a bit. Its been a sad ride for Nintendo, but they hope to turn things around with the launch of the Nintendo NX, slated for release in 2017
