After some rumors and a few leaks, Injustice 2 has been officially announced! Earlier this morning on the PlayStation Blog, NetherRealm Studios' Community Specialist Tyler Lansdown posted the official announcement trailer, seen below.
In the post Lansdown talks about what NetherRealm is adding to the game: new characters, new environments, greater environment destruction. But that's not all NetherRealm's adding. Lansdown goes on to add that they're introducing a new loot system.
The Gear System uses RPG-like mechanics to reward you with loot drops every time you play the game. With each loot drop, you will earn character-specific gear to outfit and power up your roster – changing not only the look of each character, but your fight strategy and your personal approach to every match.
Going by what Lansdown is saying, I think we can see glimpses of those RPG-like loot changes in the trailer. Seeing The Flash transform before taking on Superman a second time, then seeing the same thing happen to everyone - The Flash, Batman, Superman, Aquaman, even Supergirl - shows just how varied the Gear System could be. Of course I'm speculating from a CGI trailer, but you have to admit it looks pretty damn good.
Of course this will also continue the Injustice story, hopefully picking up where we left off, "Superman was imprisoned in a Red Sun prison cell, while Batman was continuing the good fight against the forces that would see Superman’s tyranny back in power." This trailer shows an almost arena style of combat, with Batman calling it "The Pit," and while there's no word on whether of not this will be a playable mode in the final game, it makes for interesting speculation on where the story of Injustice could go.
