Nintendo fully commits to portable gaming with the Nintendo NX

As reported by Eurogamer and confirmed by its sources, Nintendo's upcoming anticipated new console, known as the Nintendo NX, will be a portable gaming machine, with detachable controllers.

Seems this new console is a high powered mobile device with its own screen, and flanked by D-pad, and sticks, akin to the Wii U tablet, but here's where things get ... interesting. The console's aforementioned D-pad and sticks are actually detachable controllers that can be used when the console itself is connected to your home TV.

The system can be connected to your TV by placing it in a base, or docking station, which displays the console screen to your TV.

Also according to sources from Eurogamer, the NX will run on game cartridges, in stark contrast to previous consoles. Eurogamer were told that Nintendo considered a digital download only model, but decided against. I think the operative word there is "only." There may yet be hope for downloads to come to the system before launch.

Due to the changes to hardware and design, there seems to be no plans for backwards compatibility.

Nintendo has chosen to go with Tegra's mobile processor for the system's graphical power, according to Digital Foundry. That said, Nintendo has said that they're not especially concerned with graphics and instead have sacrificed a bit to make sure the game can run on a mobile device.

For now, we should probably take all this with a grain of salt, as Nintendo has given the usual PR "...unable to comment on the various rumours and speculations circulating." Best be patient until the NX launches (and maybe gets more than a codename) in March, 2017.
