Fortnite Stealth Launches Cross-platform Play?

Fortnite, the newest third-person shooter from studio Epic Games, has released a new update for players. The update came with about as much fanfare as the various system software updates for the platforms it's playable on, which is to say, close to none at all.

Still, Fortnite's latest update may turn out to be one to keep a close eye on, as this seems to be the one where Cross-platform play finally becomes a thing. I don't just mean Xbox to PC play, or PS4 to PC, either. It would seem this is the moment PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are finally playing nice, as Fortnite now has cross-platform play between the two.

It's undeniably strange that this would be the game that breaks Sony's long standing resistance to cross-platform play. Despite Microsoft's open invitation, for Fortnite to be the game to make it happen just seems plain odd but there are multiple reports confirming the feature as real.

Fortnite has been an interesting story of players initially riding high on the base building, third-person tower defense gameplay, until there came the realization that the larger gameplay is a bit too closely reminiscent of mobile games structure. Mobile games may be financially successful, but PC and console gamers usually prefer to spend more time per play session in their games vs mobile gamers.

Still, with the recent announcement that a Battle Royale style game mode, a la PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, and now Cross-platform play across all modes, including this new PUBG mode, this may be the second wind Fortnite needed.
