Kingdoms of Amalur (possibly) Revived by THQ Nordic
Following the acquisition of long-dormant IP Timesplitters in August, it seems THQ Nordic has no plans to slow down. THQ Nordic has acquired yet another hibernating franchise IP: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, as well as 38 Studios' only other project, the adjoining Amalur MMO Project Copernicus.
Set in a fantasy world, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was an open world RPG that allowed players the freedom to change how their character felt at their leisure. An incredibly flexible class system meant players could switch from a mage to a warrior to a rogue, or anywhere in between, anytime they desired.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was initially released on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2012 and was largely praised both by consumers and critics alike for its large variety in gameplay, combat, customization, and loot system. It also had a number of large names attached to it; R. A. Salvatore wrote up the g game's lore and history; Todd McFarland worked on its art; and Grant Kirkhope composed its soundtrack.
Despite all this, the game was a commercial failure, and 38 Studios landed in some pretty hot water, with some all-too-public financial and legal misfortunes eventually forcing them to shut down for good.
It'll be interesting to see what THQ Nordic plans to do with all these dormant (I refuse to use the word forgotten) IPs. Keep an eye on them, Spiderlings. Let's see how this pans out.
