Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo Still Coming to PlayStation
Some big news got dropped on us this morning, Microsoft bought ZeniMax Media, and thorough them they now own Bethesda Softworks. Some questions arose from this, the biggest of which was around Bethesda published titles that were already slated to come to PlayStation platforms, such as Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo. Well, it seems that we have our answer, as earlier this afternoon Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier gave us this tweet (all the news comes from twitter):
This is good news for PlayStation fans, and not an entirely unexpected move from Microsoft. Xbox Head Phil Spencer has said in the past that exclusives were not where Xbox plans to focus the efforts, even going so far to say that exclusives were “completely counter to what gaming is about…” There is more to that quote than “no exclusives!” but the point stands. Despite Xbox buying up just about every studio they can, they are still willing to allow certain games to be playable outside of their ecosystem.
In the interview Schrier referred to, when speaking on the likelihood of Xbox games coming to other consoles, Spencer said, “We’ll take other consoles on a case-by-case basis.” Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella said on the subject, “When we think about strategy whether it’s in gaming or any other part of Microsoft, each layer has to stand on its own for what it brings. When we talk about our content we want our content to be broadly available.”
So it is still possible we may see Bethesda published games on other platforms in the future, but that future remains to be seen. In the meantime, this is still big news for Xbox and will certainly broaden their portfolio.
