Seems word around the rumor mill was right this time, though it wasn't like anyone expected otherwise. On the official PlayStation Blog, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has been officially announced, complete with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered and a November 4 release date.
Infinite Warfare will be Infinity Ward's firs run at Activision's planned 3 year development cycle, after Treyarch and Sledgehammer have both had their turns. Infinite Warfare will take place in new settings, including "beyond the reaches of Earth." Infinity Ward wanted to make clear that this isn't going to be any kind of science fiction space battle, a-la Halo, but "by expanding the scope of the action into the vastness of space, we are taking this experience to exciting and surprising places in many ways."
Infinity Ward wants to make Infinite Warfare the best narrative experience Call of Duty they can.
"Our goal is to create the most gripping and immersive story ever told in a Call of Duty game. We’re doing that by thrusting players into wartime leadership against a relentless enemy, and making them truly feel the weight of command."
Sounds like Infinite Warfare will put the players in the role of commander or some type of leadership position, instead of a near-super soldier, but still retain the "visceral boots-on-the-ground infantry combat" Call of Duty has been known for.
Of course it wouldn't be Call of Duty without its multiplayer, and Infinity Ward's got you covered there too. "Our maps will showcase never-before-seen environments depicted for the first time in franchise history." New space maps could certainly ad new dynamics to multiplayer, if done right.
I'd really hoped Infinity Ward wouldn't do this, but they've jumped on the zombies bandwagon too. New cooperative zombies mode, complete with its own campaign and new gameplay mechanics. More details on that in the coming months.
Last, but not least, Infinity Ward has confirmed the existence of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, which will ship with the Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition. Modern Warfare Remastered will include the entire story campaign and the original multiplayer mode across 10 original maps. Which maps will be included hasn't been said.
