Bungie Moving Ever-Closer To Leaving Last Gen Destiny Players Behind

Bungie Moving Ever-Closer To Leaving Last Gen Destiny Players Behind

As the above image shows, Bungie is all but discontinuing content on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. While they're not entirely ditching last-gen players, Bungie has announced that not only will new content not be coming to last-gen consoles, but features previously accessible on last-gen will be stripped out.

According to a post on Bungie's official website, Destiny's upcoming Rise of Iron expansion, and likely any further content, will only be coming to current gen platforms- that is, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Bungie will from here on only sparsely support PS3 and Xbox 360, now referred to as "Legacy Consoles."

Starting this summer, character progression will differ for the first time between characters. Up until now, characters shared progression between last- and current-gen consoles. That is set to summer as character progression will run parallel, "separate paths" from here on out. What could these "separate paths" entail? Lets find out, as I believe Bungie earlier this morning detailed their plans, starting with stripping content from last-gen consoles.

August 2016 will bring a slew of changes to Legacy Consoles, including Trials of Osiris, the Iron Banner event, and any Live Event, such as Crimson Days, Festival of the Lost, and Sparrow League Racing, all excluding Legacy Consoles from the festivities.

Armsday and Test Weapons, Prison of Elders and Challenge of Elders, Daily and Weekly Crucible challenges, and Raids and Boss Challenges should all make it through August relatively intact, with few changes.

Xûr, Agent of the Nine will, unfortunately have a few inventory changes:

  • Individual Exotic Weapons and Armor pieces will no longer be sold by Xûr.
  • Encrypted Exotic Engrams will be sold. These will decrypt into Year 2 Exotics.
  • Encrypted Legacy Engrams will continue to be sold. These will decrypt into Year 1 Exotics.
  • Heavy Ammo Synthesis, Three of Coins, Vehicle Upgrades, Motes of Light, and Glass Needles will continue to be sold.

Doesn't sound too terrible, most of what we love Xûr for will still be sold to Legacy Consoles, but some of these other changes certainly sound a bit concerning. It seems Bungie is making their move to push Legacy players toward current-gen consoles.

Is there anyone out there still playing primarily on a Legacy Console? What are the chances you're actually reading this article? Relatively low on both accounts, I assume. Still! If you're out there, sound off in the comments!
